THEN IT IS WINTER.  THE SKY WAXES OVER and the rains fill the air with opals.  There is no flaming foliage, no apples rubying the orchards, no deer in the rut.  And the salmon—what’s left of them—have long since become nutrients for their own rivers.  It is winter and it is quiet and only the green arrows of the forest are left, pointing bravely to the laboring dawn.

Then you go in earnest.  Because this silver silence, this drizzled, chilled elegance that turns fishing water to champagne and sends saner folks straight to their down comforters, this is the true season of the steelhead.
